When Zoe Butchen—now 15—outgrew her dress-up phase, she asked her mom if there was an organization where she could donate her old dance recital costumes. They couldn't nd one, so in 2010, Zoe created her own. Through Dance Donations, a non-profit organization located in Brookfield, Connecticut, she collects gently used costumes and distributes them to dance and theater organizations in need.
"People have been so generous," she says. "We have gotten thousands of costumes and have been able to donate them to a ton of organizations around the area." However, she says they still have a huge inventory. "We want to distribute what we have so that we can make room for more," she says.
Zoe's mom Heather Butchen adds, "We’d love to find some bigger organizations that aid underprivileged kids and make them aware that we have this resource for them."
Though costumes can be mailed to recipients, Zoe and her mom find it especially rewarding when people come to the facility and check out the entire inventory. "When people come to pick out the costumes, the kids light up," says Heather. "It makes them so happy."
See dancedonations.org for information on how to donate or request costumes.
